Our Mission

Our mission at the Maine Girls Ice Hockey Association (MGIHA) is to advance girls ice hockey in Maine by supporting girls’ leagues, creating more opportunities to play and making the sport more accessible at all levels.

We aim to provide an experience that creates girls ice hockey advocates for life.

Maine is ice hockey central with hundreds of teams and thousands of players of all ages and at all skill levels. But did you know that boys have more than four times as many teams and players as girls?

MGIHA organized girls high school hockey before it was adopted by the Maine Principals Association in 2007. Now, we are dedicated to improving access to ice hockey for girls at all levels.

We’re run by volunteers – like you!

Girls hockey grows fastest in areas where one volunteer like you does simple things such as talking about hockey, inviting girls to try it, and supporting existing programs with volunteer time. These simple steps yield powerful organizations in relatively small towns.

Programs and resources are available year round

MGIHA initiatives such as the High School Spring League, support of the Southern Maine Middle School Winter League girls’ (Petterson) division, and free clinics and games for JV players are aimed at building participation in hockey statewide. Our MGIHA equipment trailer contains enough loaner hockey equipment so that girls at a time can give hockey a try at our free clinics each fall.
